Mexico: Hidalgo produces over 48,000 tons of citrus per year

The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (Sagarpa) reported that Hidalgo produces 48,332.30 tons of citrus per year, which amounts to 25,416,400 pesos (U.S. $1,941,482.55).

The agency also reported, in the pest management training workshops imparted to the growers of Huasteca, that Hidalgo had 5775.50 hectares dedicated to citrus, 5,366 for orange cultivation, about 377 hectares for limes, and 32 for tangerines.

There are 6,500 producers dedicated to the citrus industry in Hidalgo.

Sagarpa reported that Hidalgo's State Committee on Plant Health (Cesaveh) had given 1,500 citrus producers from the region of Huasteca, a workshop for the management of the yellow dragon and the Asian citrus psyllid.

The workshop's goal was to provide the producers from Hidalgo with efficient phytosanitary services in order to prevent, control and combat the pests affecting and damaging agricultural production and productivity.

Among other things, the producers were taught how to detect the HLB's symptoms, exterminate diseased plants, regional control via control areas and the use of certified seeds.

The workshop was conducted in Spanish and Nahuatl, so that all of the citrus growers from Huasteca could learn how to prevent and eradicate diseases in vegetables in order to have healthy products with great quality, which in turn would increase their sales and improve their economy.

Carmen Dorantes Martinez, Sagarpa's delegate in Hidalgo, said the training had provided producers the means to apply measures to detect and control pests; act against diseases, understand how serious these are, and avoid losses.
