Primo Anselmi (Apo Scaligera)

Harvesting of Garda strawberries has started in Verona

"We started harvesting Garda strawberries a few days ago - almost two weeks earlier than last year," says Primo Anselmi, sales manager for Apo Scaligera.

"Strawberry fields are in excellent condition - blossoming is abundant and setting is perfect, thanks to the good weather. In addition, the mild temperatures this winter have led to progressive fruitions, so now we will have to see what happens on the market."

Apo Scaligera ships most of its produce to Switzerland, Austria and Germany, which tend to prefer the Italian produce to the Spanish one, whereas "on the domestic market, we have to compete with produce from the South."

"The fact that there are fruits that are already red as well as having a lot of flowers (see photo above) means that we will probably harvest until 15th-20th May. At peak times, 250 hectares produce 250 tons of strawberries per day."

"The Spanish season lasts three months and its prices are really competitive."

The Garda variety was created with the collaboration of Forlì's CRA-FRF. "In the past 2/3 years we have invested a lot in varietal innovation as well as in the training of our associates. Now though, we are a bit worried that the weather will be the same as in 2013."
