US: 72 lane optical cherry sorting system makes its debut

Thursday, April 10th 2014 marked the annual OG Packing grower open house. Each year at the onset of the season, OG brings its growers into the facility to see featured upgrades, hear market forecasts and talk with staff about the upcoming harvest.

In addition to a fantastic lunch, prepared by grower/partner Dennis Gogna, OG growers witnessed history as OG debuted the largest optical Cherry sorting system in the United States. 72 sorting lanes and an increase number of box fillers will ensure that each cherry that comes into the packing facility has the opportunity to run on the most updated technology in the world. Our Unitec sorting systems have the ability to process a large amount of fruit at a very high speed. This helps to keep the cold chain intact from hydrocooling in the field to delivery to our customers. Additionally, we are able to maintain consistent size and color in each box we deliver to our retailers.

Spanning more than half a century, OG packing has seen and done it all to pack fresh Cherries. Optical technology has revolutionized agricultural in America and OG is paving the way to success. As a 4th generation grower/packer Tom Gotelli has seen significant changes to the cherry industry. "OG Packing invented the cluster-cutter and roller-sizer before I was born and now we usher in a new generation of technology.

Growing up in this business, who could have dreamed that there would be cameras taking 30 pictures of each individual cherry as it passes through the line - this technology is absolutely amazing."

Jim Hanson, Managing Partner of Grower Direct Marketing, the sales force behind OG Packing is excited about the progress that we have made. “As consumers become more educated about fresh cherries, these machines ensure that our retail partners receive a high quality box that is consistent in size, color and flavour.”
