France's expenditure on Spanish vegetables up by 30% since 2009

France has increased its expenditure on Spanish vegetables by 30.74% in the past five years, according to data from the Department of Customs and Special Taxes of the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness. 

The increase in value of France's purchases to Spain has grown by 24.85% between 2009 and 2013. 

In 2013, France purchased a total of 2,145.57 million kilos of Spanish fruit and vegetables, for which it paid 1,955.63 million Euro. From this, 759.26 million kilos and 724.51 million Euro corresponded to vegetables, while the totals for fruit (including citrus) stood at 1,386.31 million kilos and 1,231.12 million Euro.

In the case of greenhouse vegetables, the best prices paid by France in 2013 were those of tomatoes, with a total of 132.79 million Euro; a figure that increased by 15.53% compared to 2009. The total volume of tomatoes purchased from Spain in 2013 was of 159,640 million kilos, at an average price of 0.83 Euro per kilo. 

Meanwhile, France's expenditure on Spanish peppers in 2013 reached a total of 119.18 million Euro; an increase of 48.19% compared to 2009. The total volume was of 97.22 million kilos, at a price of 1.22 Euro per kilo.

As for the courgettes, the value of purchases increased in 2013 to 89.19 million Euro; 22.68% more than in 2009. The total volume purchased in 2013 amounted to 96.65 million kilos, at an average price of 0.92 Euro per kilo. 

Spanish aubergine sales to its neighbour at the north of the Pyrenees reached 43,160 million kilos and a value of 43.60 million Euro; a 30.88% increase compared to 2009. 

The volume of cucumbers imported by France in 2013 reached 40.42 million kilos, with a value of 35.64 million Euro (15.76% more than in 2009).

Melons and watermelons
France's expenditure on Spanish watermelons in 2013 reached 52.1 million Euro; 58.31% more than in 2009. The total volume exported by Spain was of 106,740 million kilos, at an average price of 0.49 Euro per kilo. 

As for melons, France spent a total of 82.81 million Euro in 2013; 91.69% more than four years earlier. The total volume stood at around 94.57 million kilos, at an average price of 0.87 Euro per kilo.
