Low trade

Panama: Onion growers afraid of losing their crops

Natá's onion producers are growing desperate, as they assure that the onion harvest is already underway, but trade volumes are not as good as expected and there are fears about this year's production being lost, since they already have hundreds of quintals of the product at their homes.

The onion harvest began a few weeks ago and only 10,000 out of the 40,000 quintals they planned to sell have been harvested. They say that the prices offered are not good and the Institute of Agricultural Trading (Ima) will only purchase 10,000 quintals.

Among other problems, the onion producers say the lack of water is another limiting factor, and around 80% of the crops that have yet to be harvested lack water.

The water problem must be resolved in the next two days with reservoirs for the producers, and the Ministry of Agricultural Development (MIDA) ensures that the purchasing of onions has already begun.

This year, Natá's onion production has dropped compared to previous years, but despite this, plenty of onions are to be found in houses due to the lack of a curing plant.
