Fruit import market situation:

Exceptionally high melon prices; mangoes on the rise

Good prices are being paid for import melons at the moment. Supply is limited, resulting in average prices of 13 Euro for Galia melons, 14 Euro for Yellow melons and 15 Euro for Piel de Sapo melons. Cantaloupe melons remain at around 8.50/9 Euro; somewhat behind the rest, although still at a good level. Watermelons with seeds reach 1.10 Euro, while seedless watermelons are sold for 1.30 Euro/kilo.

Traders hope for the remainder of the season to bring good results, especially since the New Delhi-virus, which has already left its mark in the courgette sector, is also spreading to melons. In any case, Almeria's melon shipments are expected to drop by around 30% and this will entail opportunities for overseas imports, as supply will be reduced.

Other imported fruits on the rise include pineapples, with a price of around 9 Euro, and limes, which have gone from 4 to 6/7 Euro. Regarding mangoes, traders assure that all volumes imported are instantly sold. The Keith and Kent reach maximum prices of 9.50 Euro, while the Tommy Atkins stands around 2 Euro lower. The top fruit import market is moving slowly. Apples are mostly of Brazilian origin, with some produce also from South Africa and Chile.

The avocado market is on a downward spiral. Prices initially at around 9.50 Euro have dropped to 6.50 Euro. The orange and grapefruit markets are also going through a bad moment. Spain has had the worst orange season on record, while traders say that the Egyptian produce remains at around 6/7 Euro. The situation of the lemon market is normal, although mandarins are in the better position in the citrus market. Satsumas reach prices of around 13 Euro.
