Concentration of Rewe Group warehouses

The Rewe Group is systematically extending its logistics by taking their first German main warehouse to fruit and vegetables in Leipzig. Until now all fruit and vegetable supplier passed through one or more regional warehouses throughout Germany to supply the amounts ordered by the Rewe Group. Now they will primarily supply their wares to the main warehouse. The Rewe Group will take care of the logistics of the regional warehouses from there, reports the German website Fruchthandel.de. The warehouse in Leipzig is 11,000 m2 and was designed by logistic real estate developer Goodman.

Over the next few years the Rewe Group plans to found a number of strategically placed main warehouses throughout Germany, in addition to the main warehouse in Leipzig. The Rewe Group sees multiple advantages in this switch to main warehouses: first of all it will increase the freshness of sensitive product groups in the supermarkets. Until now large parts of the entire fruit and vegetable assortment had to be stored in every regional warehouse. Now it will only be necessary in the main warehouses. This will decrease the total amount of stored fruit and vegetables.

The main warehouses will also save time for the supplier. They will no longer have to make the long journeys to the separate regional warehouses and this means the driving, waiting and docking time will be cut. "Concentration in the main warehouse makes it easier to guarantee quality. We can now control the whole stock centrally. We're also saving our suppliers time," says a member of management, Matthias Geuder. Smaller, regional suppliers, however, can still supply straight to a regional warehouse, emphasises Geuder.
