F.lli Torti

Italy: Why we stopped onion imports from India

"We imported onions from India up to a couple of years ago, even though we did not import big volumes as we felt they never quite achieved the standards required by the Italian market. They look OK but the taste is not that great and, in addition, they became pink when cooked. Nowadays there are more serious reasons though," explain the managers of F.lli Torti S.r.l.

The company specialises in the production and sale of potatoes and onions and it is a family business.

Left to right: the founders of the company Gaetano and Cleto Torti at the bottom with Alessandro, Piera, Elena and Marco Torti behind them.

"Our decision derives by the two Italian Navy soldiers who are still in prison in India without a fair trial. Most of our colleagues went on as if nothing happened, but we cannot do it, we did it to support them."

The goods will be replaced by imports from Argentina, Mexico and Australia, "as we used to do in the past."
