Follows an early harvest:

Possible shortage Spanish iceberg lettuce

According to estimates by Proexport, who base their information on production in Alicante and Murcia, there will be 30% fewer iceberg lettuces harvested than planned. Fernando P. Gómez Molina, general director of Proexport, stated: "Harvest production is less than expected and there are fears that the deficit will be even higher than imagined around Easter, precisely when European demand is at its highest."

The smaller amounts are a result of high temperatures during the current season. Information from the Spanish meteorological institute AMET reported that the last winter in Murcia was the warmest since 2007 which resulted in the entire harvest being 15 days early. This mainly affected last month's crops but could lead to a deficit in the coming weeks.

Murcia and Almería are the largest suppliers of lettuce in Europe. Murcia's portion of total Spanish export is around 40%, followed by Andalusia with 35%. 82% of Murcia's lettuce harvest comprises of iceberg.
