Spain: 2013 agri-food exports valued at 38 billionEuro

Spanish agri-food exports in 2013 reached a value of 38 billion Euro; 16.2% of the country's total exports, while the value of imports stood at 30 billion Euro (12% of the total). This means that a 7,841 million Euro surplus was achieved, according to the first analyses of Spain's Foreign Trade for the year 2013.

Compared to 2012, exports have increased by around 3.9%, while imports have dropped by 2.1%. The surplus in 2013 for the food subsector was 36% better than in the previous year, reaching 7.5 billion Euro, as a result of the 4% rise in exports and a 2% reduction in import volumes, according to data provided by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment.

These good results are a testament to the great exporting potential of Spain's agri-food and fishing sector, focused on exporting high-quality products at good prices. In this sense, it is worth noting that Spain was the world's eighth largest exporter, as well as the EU's fourth largest, in the year 2012.

Furthermore, it is worth noting that the coverage rate (percentage of imports that can be paid for with the revenue generated by exports during the same period) reached 126% last year for the entire sector.

Some of the more relevant subsectors are fruits, with exports valued at around 7 billion Euro per year, and vegetables, with 4,800 million Euro/year, among others.
