The European Commission has proposed to tighten the regulations for organic products and to align them, reports the German website Fruchthandel.de. This goes for both European and imported products. This should fix the faults in the current system and meet the wishes of consumers and producers. The regulation also concerns the extension of checks and the simplification of the access to organic production for small growers by way of group certification. They also want to simplify control regulations to lower costs.
Dacian Ciolos, the European Commissioner responsible for the agricultural development sector in the EU said: "The future of the organic sector in the EU depends on the quality and integrity of the products that are sold under the European organic brand. The European Commission aims for more and better organic products for the EU and hopes to attain this by increasing the consumers' confidence in organic products and by removing obstacles in the extension of the organic production in the EU."
