Guatemala: Banana sales revenues increased by 3.3%

According to the Bank of Guatemala (Banguat), Banana sales revenues recorded in January 2014 amounted to U.S. $45,913,000, 3.3 percent more than in the same period of 2013.

Bernardo Roehrs, president of the Association of Independent Banana Producers (APIB), said that the banana industry was one of the most productive ones in the country thanks to the investment in technology to make better use of water resources in irrigation systems, electric valves and sprinklers.

According to data from Banguat, the sector's revenues increased by 25% in 2013, as they amounted to $614,948,000 while in 2012 they totalled $499.847.000 dollars. 

Crops
According to data from APIB, the cultivable area is of 59.391 hectares, which yield of 40.4 tons and produce no less than 2.4 million tonnes per year.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food, Escuintla, which has 18,553 hectares of this crop, is the region with the highest production.

José Santiago Molina, president of the Chamber of Agriculture, noted that Guatemala is one of the countries with the highest yield per hectare.
