Italy: Consumers appreciate pears with red skin

"Research is working on varieties with unusual characteristics, such as pears with red skin," says Walther Faedi, director of Folrì's CRA-FRF.

"We do have a consolidated standard for pears, but we hope to increase prices and therefore obtain better profits for growers thanks to the new varieties and to the opening of the US and Asian markets."

"Thanks to New Plant, the CRA-FRF introduced Falstaff, which in 2012 won the Macfrut innovation Oscar. It is a new autumn variety which has an oblong shape and a red skin. The rights to sell it are exclusive to New Plant, of which Aprofruit Italia, Apo Conerpo and Oroger Fresco are part.

Sales tests were really positive, as the variety is considered very innovative and works well as it is combined with the high quality of the fruit. The produce can be recognised easily and the taste is excellent, "so we expect it to be very popular in European supermarkets in a few years' time."

CRA-FRF and New Plant are working to further increase the varieties available and are currently considering new selections of Decana and William pears. The objective is to obtain pears that also have a red pulp in addition to the peel.
