Germany: Smaller onion harvest in 2013 despite increase in area

In 2013 in Germany onions (excluding spring onions) were grown on an area of almost 9,700 hectares. This means that the cultivation area grew by 2% compared to last year, reports the German Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft (AMI) on their website.

The state of Lower Saxony remains the leader in onion cultivation, as the cultivation was extended by 3% here. In Rheinland-Pfalz there was a larger increase in area, 22%. In Bavaria and Hessen on the other hand, the onion area decreased by 6%.
