Mexico: Drastic drop in mango production volumes expected

Mango producers from the municipalities of El Pozole and Escuinapa expect the yield of their plantations to drop by around 30% this season as a result of the late flowering registered in the region of Sinaloa.

This will have serious effects for both towns, and thus growers, leaders of agricultural organisations and mayors will create a common front to find solutions.

The mayor of Escuinapa, Bonifacio Bustamante Hernández, who is also a mango producer, assured that the sector is in a critical position, with estimations pointing to a drop in production volumes of around 70%.

He explained that, initially, both towns expected to make 300 million pesos in revenue, although the atypical flowering has reduced this figure by 260 million pesos.

For his part, Porfirio Salas Castillo, head of Escuinapa's Natural Rural Confederation, stated that solid and permanent support is needed, as the sector suffers new problems each year, such as droughts, diseases or rains, which make it hard for producers to recoup their investments.
