Perfect start for German asparagus

Asparagus has been available in Germany for the last two weeks, which is about two weeks earlier than last year. Expectations are high, with larger volumes and good quality at the start, thanks to favourable weather.

The asparagus is fetching high prices at the moment. “Things are looking good for quality and price,” says Stefanie Konrad from OGV Bruchsal. “We are starting with an impressive price per kilo. However, this is sold mainly to restaurants and foodservices.”

In the beginning prices are higher and will wind down once the market gets flooded. That’s the time that most consumers will buy it in the supermarkets.

Most of the volume will stay in Germany, but some is for export all over Europe, primarily to Switzerland.
