China: Ripe cherries selling for 50 yuan ($8 USD) per kilo

As the temperature climbs, fruit prices have started to climb as well. Cherries have recently entered the market, and compared with the last year’s highest price at 40 yuan/half kg, it has increased 10 yuan this year. We saw at some fruit stores that were two cherry sizes priced at 35 yuan/half kg and 50 yuan /half kg. (1 yuan= $0.16 USD)

A fruit wholesaler in Chongqing said that most of the cherries come from Panzhihua, with some from Shandong. When the weather gets hotter, the prices may drop then. This year's fruit market prices are generally higher, including banana’s wholesale price which has recently risen as well. The banana’s retail price rose more than 50%, more than 5 yuan per half kilo, compared to the same period last year.
