Fairtrade brand increases attractiveness of BanaBay bananas

First class 'BanaBay' bananas from Ecuador recently received the 'Fairtrade' and 'Organic Fairtrade' brands. The growers hope that this will increase the attractiveness of their fruits and that this will help increase the global demand, the German website Fruchtportal.de reports.

In the United Kingdom, where bananas are hugely popular, every third banana is 'Fairtrade', which gives an impression of the possibilities here and in other countries. Mark O'Sullivan, manager of 'BanaBary' explains: "The fairtrade status is recognised and trusted worldwide. This status is needed when we enter new markets, like the US, where we are testing the sales of our products at the moment. The consumers there are increasingly concerned about the origin of the food that was produced far away, and have learned to recognise the fairtrade brand as a sign of foods being grown ethically."
