Mexico: Crisis in apple production

Domestic apple producers met with members of the Committee on Agriculture and with federal officials to request the implementation of actions to promote their product, which they can no longer sell due to the invasion of fruit from the United States.

The producers asked the legislative commission to promote agriculture and campaigns for the consumption of the national apple.

Producers have given away bags of apples and demand a stop on imports and that Mexicans consume the national product. Furthermore, they argue, their fruit tastes better than the one sold in supermarkets.

They also demanded that the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit established a two-peso per kilo subsidy for apples, and that the federal government makes agreements with large retail chains so that they acquire the Mexican product.
