"Rob de Jong: "Strange price levels this season"

BR Fresh Exotics again on Chinese ginger tour

During their last visit in 2013 ginger prices for the rest of the year were good. How this new season has developed, however, has been bizarre to say the least; so it was time for Rob de Jong from BR Fresh Exotics and Benson Gerald from the Italian office in Bergamo, to visit the country and see with their own eyes, what the Chinese expectation were for the rest of the season. Last week they visited three of their four suppliers in Anqiu.

"A quick check of a local Anqiu supermarket revealed the local consumption price was around two Euro a kilo, so even for the Chinese there was no escape. Export prices from China are still very high, added to by the rising cost of sea freight. Purchase prices are now already higher than the current Dutch price. "What is wisdom, for a yearly stagnation bump to happen in April/May is mind blowing," said Rob de Jong to himself. "BR Fresh Logistics is committed to carry on with import. Continuing to provide is our motto and with a good season behind us this bump will be financially smoothed out again."

In addition, BR Fresh Exotics looked at the Chinese eddo production. "What we have seen on location is very promising compared to the quality recently seen on the Dutch market. After a rest we will pick up the thread for import of eddo."
