Uruguay: Vegetable prices fall by up to 33%

Last week, the prices of several horticultural products decreased between 20 and 33 percent at the Mercado Modelo. The drop in prices was a result of imports, in some cases, such as the tomato, and the effect of the supply and demand with the onset of the first cold, after the sector had recovered from the heavy rains in February.

Tomato wholesale prices ranged between 70 and 80 pesos per kilo, a 20% drop when compared to the week that ended on March 16.

Zucchini prices dropped the most (33%) as there was a higher supply of them. The price of green bell peppers decreased by 28% while the red variety dropped by 21%; a result of the harvest in the north coast beginning to gain importance.

Spinach lowered its price by 25%, chards by 22% and carrots by 8.3%.
