Ecuadorian bananas back in Brazil after 17 years

On 21 March, the Brazilian government eliminated the sanitary restrictions for the import of Ecuadorian bananas; a relief for Ecuador's exporting sector, which will regain access to the Brazilian market.

The ministry of Commerce, Francisco Rivadeneira, congratulated the technical team for this success. He also thanked Ecuador's ambassador in Brazil, Horacio Sevilla, and Brazil's ambassador in Ecuador, Fernando Simas, and predicted a bright future for the banana sector; one of the engines of Ecuador's economy.

The team led by the Ministry of Foreign Trade, Agrocalidad and the private sector presented all the documentary evidence to their Brazilian counterparts, which has resulted in the end of the restrictions that had been in place since 1997 as a result of the spread of two pests: moko disease and black sigatoka.

The banana sector's exports have grown by 19% in the past five years, going from 1,995,949.70 dollars in revenue in 2009 to 2,375,986.04 in 2013, according to data provided by Ecuador's Central Bank.

The main destinations for this product are Russia, the United States and Italy. The quality of Ecuadorian bananas is world-renowned and the Brazilian market will receive only the best.
