Rio Grande Del Norte and Ceara can now export the fruit to Chile

Chile authorizes Brazillian imports of melon and watermelon

Brazil's Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAPA) said it had received a communication from its Chilean counterpart on the publication of the protocol that establishes the phytosanitary requirements for the importation of fresh melon (Cucumus melo) and watermelon ( Citrullus Ianatus ) from Brazil in the Official Gazette of Chile.

Exports via Port Natal: The main market is Europe, but Chile will also start buying.

In 2013 a technical mission of the Agricultural and Livestock Service of Chile (SAG) evaluated in situ, together with the competent Brazilian phytosanitary authority, the work done to keep the Brazilian states of Rio Grande do Norte and Ceará free of fruit flies. They verified the production and packing system of both fruits in some municipalities of both states.

SAG's 1482 resolution – which you can find here – establishes that the fruit must come from areas free of Anastrepha grandis and that exports of both fruits must be covered by an official phytosanitary certificate from the country of origin.

Watermelon should have an additional declaration stating that it is free from Diaphania hyalinata while the melon should have a statement that is free from Diaphania hyalinata and Pseudococcus jackbeardsleyi.

Marcelo Junqueira, from the MAP, said that the Ministry of agriculture considered the opening of Chile to their fruits as a sign of trust on the quality of Brazilian products, which would lead to the opening of other markets.

Currently, Brazil exports watermelon to 11 countries, including several members of the European Union, Mercosur and Russia.

The country also exports melon to 21 countries, including Canada, USA, Norway, Russia, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, and members of the European Union, among others. Brazil is the world's third largest producer of fruits, behind China and India.
