US (FL): Early start to sweet corn season

A combination of weather factors has made for an early start to this year's Florida sweet corn harvest. With a good growing season and good rains, availability of sweet corn is expected to last through Memorial Day.

“We've had a very good growing season, and we're on track for an early start,” said Paul Allen, a Florida grower and President of the Sunshine Sweet Corn Farmers of Florida. Last year's harvest was delayed by frost in March, but Allen pointed to good weather conditions this year as a reason for the early availability of this year's sweet corn crop.

“The growing season has been very good, with timely rains that have developed a great-looking crop,” said Allen. “Sweet corn from Florida is available now, and Sunshine Sweet varieties are becoming ready for harvest and will be widely available throughout April and May in Florida.” Florida is the largest grower of sweet corn in the United States. The state is responsible for supplying the market from November through May with peak production in April and May.
