Nello Alba (Oranfrizer)

Italy: Blood oranges need aggregation

"It is rather strange having Moroccan produce here in Sicily, where our produce is actually better," says Nello Alba (in the photo), sole administrator of Oranfrizer, a company that brought blood oranges worldwide.

"Maybe our company is not affected by this, but it definitely worries workers. The same is happening in Spain and so we need to understand how this produce reaches the market. There are no such problems in Norway but for example there are in Russia."

"This season is very different from last year and it has presented problems such as the repositioning of excess produce (to the processing industry or other sales channels) and small grades. In addition, the fact that production peaked between January and February meant it was absorbed with more difficulty."

Oranfrizer had no particular problems as it had high-quality oranges. "So far, volumes and consumption were good, so much so that we managed to enter Russia and Switzerland. Bigger blood oranges achieve better prices than blond ones."

"Due to the strong winds of the past few weeks and of the hailstorm that occurred last Tuesday, volumes of appealing big oranges were slightly reduced."

"The thing is, the Sicilian citrus fruit system needs to renovate. We must remove the citrus groves affected by CTV and test new clones and varieties. In addition, there are too many operators and too many companies, so we should reorganise the chain and aggregate in order to receive grants from the EU and present our produce better."
