Abundance of salad leads to plummeting prices in France
The season has been favourable to salad growth, which has led to over-production resulting in low prices. 30 cents a piece is not enough for producers to earn a decent income (minimum 50 cents) and cover greenhouse and labour costs . Jean-Michel Fenes deplores a €300,000 shortfall on his salad production.
He obviously regrets large retailers' low purchase price policies and believes that ''consumer protection'' has its limits - survival of the farmers. There are only 500 left in the Pyrénées-Orientales region (a figure that has been on a constant decrease for a few years now).
