"Italy: "Torpedino Project" grows"

"This year we sowed 180,000 seeds. Sowing and transplants are carried out between February and July, while the produce is harvested between May and November. We are waiting for the season to be over so we can see how the produce does," explains Mariano Di Vito, manager of Mafalda srl.

Small, oblong, red or green, with an intense or sweet acid taste, crunchy and compact - Torpedino tomatoes do have appealing characteristics. Mafalda is the company trusted with the coordination, packaging and marketing of the produce.

"Torpedino are doing well so far. We currently supply the produce mainly to the Veneto, Campania and Lazio regions, but 20% of the total goes to Poland and England."

According to the manager, the first crops were planted in Sicily in 2007 and growers from the Fondi-Sperlonga plain and Mafalda srl joined in between 2010 and 2011.

Torpedino can either be sold in bunches or singularly. Fruits are 4-6 cm long with a dark green crown. They then become dark red, almost brown.

The taste is strong and delicate at the same time with the perfect balance between sweetness and acidity. It can be harvested either green or red. One of its most important characteristics is its shelf-life, as it does not crack or go mouldy and it can last for up to 20 days. It also has a high lycopene content.

Torpedino was showcased on 28th February 2014 during an event held in a restaurant to present the product to operators, consumers and to the press. The tomatoes were used in a variety of dishes such as pizza with red and fried Torpedinos, steamed shrimp with green Torpedino jam, red Torpedino and taralli-crusted amberjack fillet, spaghettoni with red Torpedinos and spaghetti with squid and green Torpedinos.

Torpedino tomatoes have also been used for ice-cream. It can be found at the "Polo Nord" ice-cream parlour in Fondi.
