"Growers have to take advantage of market opportunities"

Lower Saxony will pay readily for quality potatoes

Light and high quality potatoes are selling well in the German state of Lower Saxony at the moment, reports the German website Topagrar.com. Agricultural organisation 'Landvolk Niedersaschen' reported that growers are receiving very attractive prices for their products at the end of the sales season. This means that the great care taken during harvest and storage is paying off

"Growers who still have potatoes stored should chase after and take advantage of them," advises Thorsten Riggert, 'Landvolk Niedersaschen' potato expert. He also pointed out that the consumer prices have also been at a relatively good level.

According to figures from the German Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft (AMI) the potato prices in the food trade in February were at 0.88 Euro per kg for packagings from 1.0 to 2.5 kg in February. This price clearly beat the level of last year at 0.73 Euro per kg and the 2011 price of 0.80 Euro per kg.

But the potatoes were even cheaper straight from the grower. Here the Landbouwschap Niedersachsen confirmed current pries of around 0.45 Euro per kg among bags of 10 kg or 12.5 kg. But depending on the variety and the lay of the potato land, there were still clear differences in price.
