Cucumber prices under pressure

Due to the lovely weather, Dutch cucumber crops are well ahead of last year but this puts cucumber prices under pressure, reports Kompany, Europe's largest cucumber sales organisation. "Spanish supplies are never predictable, but Dutch supply is higher than last year so altogether the total volume available on the European market is higher and causes the necessary pressure on price."

Switched over to Dutch product
According to the sales company, the majority of German chain stores switched over to the Dutch product and will continue to receive it next week. "We expect that in 14 days all supermarkets will be selling Dutch cucumbers." According to Kompany, how sales run over the coming weeks very much depends on the weather. "Spanish production will fall and Dutch production will remain on top."

High wire cultivation
According to the sales organisation, cucumber quality is good. "We have done more high wire cultivation and have, therefore, a better quality and valued block." The Kompany area is 10% less. "Therefore, more growers have chosen to plant twice and some, over the summer, use high wire cultivation to save money. In any case, the AQS judges regard this to be a super block."
