Schleswig-Holstein: field crop acreage decreased in 2013

Over the last year, the total acreage used for field crops in the German state of Schleswig-Holstein decreased by 8% to 5.528 hectares, reports German website Fruchthandel.de which follows a downward trend in open field cultivation.

The area was used by 423 companies, around 3% less than 2012. Nearly two thirds of these companies cultivated over an area of 5 hectares or more and together produced 94% of open field products; a total vegetable harvest of 302,000 tons. Important vegetable varieties were cabbage, carrot and asparagus. Three cabbage varieties, white cabbage, red cabbage and savoy occupied 55% (3,013 hectares) of the total area. Asparagus acreage remained almost unchanged from 2012.
