Mexico: Avocado and lime distribution in Michoacan is back to normal
Michoacan's federal deputy, Ernesto Nuñez Aguilar, said that lime and avocado production and distribution in Michoacán was gradually returning to normal conditions because criminal gangs have lost control over basic commodities thanks to the security strategy established by the federal government. "We're regaining the land, at least they no longer have control. There was a time when these groups wouldn't allow limes to leave Apatzingán because they controlled it. They would set the prices, but that is over now."
The price of limes, however, is still high. The average wholesale price is 35 pesos per kilogram while its retail price can reach up to 50 pesos.
The National Agricultural Council confirmed that the price has skyrocketed due to the insecurity and pests affecting limes. Avocado could soon be spiking due to its low production.
