Peru: 118,426 tonnes of mangoes exported so far this season

Since the beginning of the current mango campaign (28 October 2013) until week 8 (23 February 2014), a total of 118,426 tonnes (5,162 containers) have been exported, as reported by the Peruvian Association of Mango Producers and Exporters (APEM).

This figure represents a 35.7% increase compared to the previous campaign, when export volumes amounted to 87,492 tonnes (3.804 containers) during the same period.

The main destinations for those mangoes so far have been: Europe (2,594 containers), United States (2,078 containers) and Canada (266 containers). The rest (224 containers) were shipped to various other markets.

The general manager of APEM, Juan Carlos Rivera, stressed that the increase in export volumes, and consequently of the production, is due to two reasons: on the one hand, the trees planted between 2005 and 2008 are now in a mature stage, which results in a higher yield. On the other hand, the weather conditions during the winter were ideal for the flowering.

He informed that the present campaign should last until week 16 (20 April), stressing that the harvest is almost finished in Piura, half way done in Lambayeque, and only just starting in Casma.

"This season's export volumes are actually expected to break the record registered in the 2010/2011 campaign, when 130,000 tonnes were shipped," he highlighted.
