FFSP authorises cultivation of Florida blueberry varieties in Spain

Rusticas del Guadalquivir (Spain), the exclusive licensee of the Florida Foundation Seed Producer, Inc (FFSP) for Europe and North Africa and Onuba Fruit, signed an agreement on 4 March in Huelva that will regularise and legalise the cultivation of blueberry varieties developed by the University of Florida by cooperatives and producers associated to Onuba Fruit.

The University of Florida is a global leader in the development of new blueberry varieties for warm climates, such as Florida or south west Spain, and Spanish producers and operators are well aware that the only legal way to access them is by means of a licence, as failure to do so can entail severe penalties.

With the signing of the agreement, which covers a large percentage of Huelva's blueberry plantations, other province's producers and operators currently cultivating non-authorised varieties owned by the University of Florida, will be offered the chance to regularise their plantations up until 11 April 2014 by adhering to the aforementioned pact.

After this deadline expires, the University of Florida warns that it will take legal action against anyone producing or selling the illegal fruit within the European Union.

The University is convinced that this opportunity is an important step forward towards the professionalism and strengthening of the sector, as it will allow it to face the future within a legal and stable framework.

Those interested in adhering to the agreement must apply to Mr Diego Pozancos before 11 April via telephone or e-mail.
