Peru: Tangerine prices in the domestic market increase market

The price of tangerines in the local market is higher than in the international markets in February, when the Peruvian tangerine campaign starts, said Sergio del Castillo Valderrama, Procitrus' CEO.

"The current price of tangerine in local supermarkets is of U.S. $2.14, while in the international market the FOB price is around $1.83," he compared.

In that regard, he stressed that local supermarkets paid producers well, so the domestic market was also a good target for them. Thus, producers and businessmen could focus on both fronts, the national and international markets.

The tangerine export season began this week, with exports to the European market, particularly to the UK, mainly of the earliest Okitsu Satsuma variety.

"Shipments of these early varieties of tangerines from Peru will compete with the production of Argentina, Uruguay and South Africa; the southern hemisphere countries currently in production," he said.

In this regard, he said, the price obtained by these early varieties depends a lot on how the northern hemisphere's campaign came to an end.
