EU and Brazil want to accelerate free trading zone

Brazil and the EU want to accelerate the negotiations on a common market between South America (Mercosur) and the European Union, which have been faltering for years, the Swiss website swisscoffel.ch reports.

"We are close to an agreement for the first time," says the Brazilian president Dilma Rousseff in Brussels after talks with the president of the European Council Herman van Rompuy and president of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso. The Eu and Mercosur want to found a free trading zone and have been fighting about quotas for duty free import of certain goods.

"I think both parties are very conscious of the importance of such a treat," says Dilma Rousseff. "The advancement of trade will also help advance development and create growth." Without directly mentioning the free trade treaty with the US. Barroso said: "Europe is working on a series of bilateral agreements. It would be a disgrace if we could not have a similar treaty with our friends in Brazil and Mercosur."
