"Mert Buke: "We want to control the chain in order to grow the best pineapple"

Verita start growing pineapples in Costa Rica

Verita has a sales office in the Netherlands since 2007, for the last two years this has been in Ridderkerk. Verita Costa Rica office started their operation late 2011. The main product for Verita Group is pineapple where they have a market share of 50% in the Turkish market. A new development is that the company has started growing its own pineapples in Costa Rica. "We support farmers with our production engineer who select seeds, chemicals and fertilizers for them; On this way we control the quality since the begining of production process. This is all with only one purpose and that is to grow the best pineapples," says Mert Büke. "We want to plant pineapples according to customer`s requirement which will be private production project ."

In addition to Turkey, countries such as Azerbaijan and Georgia are also growing markets and Russia is already a big market for Verita. "Seven years ago pineapple was practically an unknown product in Turkey. Through a marketing campaign including store demonstrations and sponsored TV chefs, we have put the pineapple on the map in Turkey. We also supply pineapple peelers to supermarkets and that has given sales a huge boost. Consumers choose their own pineapple, which is then sliced and they get it ready-to-eat in a bag to take home," says Mert out.

Besides pineapple, Verita's product range also includes asparagus, berries, grapes, exotics, hard and stone fruits. "In the last three years exotics, such as avocados, mangoes and berries have really taken off," said Mert. In addition to the Costa Rican and Turkish production, Verita Holland also sends a weekly mixed truck load of Dutch and worldwide products to Turkey, Georgia and Azerbaijan.
