Algerian vegetable export secures contract with Qatar

Over the last few years, vegetable and citrus farming in Ain Defla is developing thanks to sustained government support, despite some problems such as insufficient storage space. In order to export the surplus of certain products, the Chamber of Agriculture and the agricultural services have joined together.

According to El Hadj Djaallali, President of the Ain Defla Chamber of Agriculture, the agricultural services have recently secured a contract with Qatar to export 1,250 kg of onion to them.

It is the second time that the services have turned to export- the first time was not a success (potatoes sent to Spain were refused at delivery due to their poor state following bad storage and transport conditions).

The President of the Chamber of Agriculture will advise the Prime Minister that they have contacts with Saudi Arabia and Marseille, who are currently interested in the Ain Defla potato.

Other local fruit and vegetables are grown by families who rely on this form of income to live. This also maintains a local culture that is at risk of being lost due to the influx of imported products, which despite high prices does not put off the consumer.
