Argentina to compete with Peru and Chile in pomegranate market

On 10 February, Granadas Argentinas, a company under the Estancia La Paz S.A. group, started the harvest of the Acco pomegranate variety at its plantation in the province of Cordoba. It will then continue with the Wonderful in early March, which will be exported to the firm's clients in Belgium, France, England, Spain and Russia.

With approximately 250 hectares planted and certified by Global G.A.P. and its own packing plant, "Granadas Argentinas has the potential to become a leading producer in terms of both quality and volumes and consolidate as one of the main suppliers for the northern hemisphere during the off-season period," claims Marcelo Scarafia, of Granadas Argentinas.

"The plantation's location allows us to harvest early, giving us an advantage over producers in other latitudes, particularly Chile, which along with Peru is one of the largest pomegranate producers in Latin America," he explains.

"The earlier harvest and the exports being shipped from Buenos Aires, consequently avoiding the Panama Canal, are two of the factors which our European clients are said to appreciate the most at the latest edition of Fruit Logistica, in Berlin."

The company kicked its project off in 2009 with the technical assistance of TikaGroup, which supplied it with genetic material imported from Israel. Both companies conduct tests at a plantation in Cruz del Eje and monitor the adaptation of other varieties, such as the Shani Shonai, Emek, 116, Kamel and Shir.

For 2016, the company expects to be able to export 200 containers of Class I and II fruit during the months of January and February.
