Mexico: Sinaloa has the potential to produce citrus

Sinaloa has all the conditions to be a potential citrus producer in Mexico, said state governor, Mario Lopez Valdez, when he officially inaugurated the International Citrus Nurserymen Congress, which brings together more than six hundred experts and producers from twenty-five countries.

He stressed that Veracruz, Tamaulipas, Michoacán, Jalisco and Colima have the highest citrus production in the country, while Sinaloa ranks twentieth. As such, Sinaloa should work to expand citrus activity particularly in areas of high poverty in order to generate productive activities and prevent migration to urban centres.

López Valdez reiterated that they would seek to enhance this activity in order to diversify the state's economy by delivering plants, giving training so as to technify irrigation and modernize greenhouses.

He noted that this Congress was a good opportunity to build networks, share knowledge in the field of nurseries and establish business relationships. Furthermore, they are seeking to establish cultures of other species and citrus varieties to strengthen the export market.

Currently, Sinaloa produces 5,000 tons of Persian lime for export, but there are projects for plantation that would have an output of about 60,000 tons, mainly distributed in the municipalities of Salvador Alvarado, Angostura, Mocorito, Sinaloa de Leyva, Elota, Culiacan and Badiraguato. They are also about to start planting in El Fuerte.
