Germany: limited banana supply

Cool weather conditions in the countries of origin, and delayed ship arrivals due to storms, have led to limited banana supplies for the German market. The precise figures received by supermarket chains is hard to calculate, according to German Agricultural Market Information bureau (AMI).

At the same time, German households are demanding more bananas. Although the number of households buying bananas was slightly lower in week 7 than the previous week, the value still exceeded that of the last three years by 29.1%

Actions promoting bananas for less than a Euro per kg have been used where this used to be the exception for German supermarkets. The average consumer price is between 1.59 and 1.99 Euro per kg. If the present consumption rate and weather conditions in the countries of origin continue, we will definitely see rising prices.
