Germany: Fair trade on the rise - particularly for quality organic

Nürnberg - The increased range of Fairtrade products in supermarket chains and discounters in Germany ensures that revenues have increased, reports German website Proplanta.de.

"The Fairtrade brand in the German market has been responsible for a large part of this," said Dieter Overath from the TransFair association last Thursday at the organic fair Biofach in Nürnberg. "There are no supermarkets to find in Germany, who does not have Fairtrade products in their selection."

The exact figures are not known, but Germany have overtaken Switzerland and France in the last year and are second to Great Britain, who are the largest outlet for Fairtrade products in the world. "There is no other country where the organic portion of Fairtrade products is so high as in Germany," Overath added. "Two thirds of products with the Fairtrade brand are at the same time certified organic here. Worldwide the proportion is only about one third."
