Mayoral candidates want wider use of organic products in Paris canteens

It is rare that the 2014 mayoral candidates agree on the same project- but the wider use of organic products in Parisian school canteens is one of them.

Whilst organic produce represents 37% of the food in Parisian nurseries and 22% in primary schools, Nathalie Kosciusko-Morizet (UMP) is committed to making it 35%, promising 100% ''for fruit and vegetables'' by 2020. ''Supply will be organised prioritising producers from the Île de France to keep a short supply chain,'' the candidate explains.

On the left, Anne Hidalgo (PS) has committed to making it 50%. She also foresees ''partnerships with farmers from the Île-de-France so that the essential food is of local origin and high quality.''

But the most ambitious candidate is Christophe Najdovski (EELV ,''Europe Ecologie''- Green Party) who guarantees 100% ''organic or local'' produce during his term. ''We want a wider user of quality food'' says the candidate who envisages floating markets along the river Seine to help promote French farming.
