Peru: Coca crops to be replaced by banana crops

Over 180 former producers of coca, in nine communities of Supte, located in the region of Huanuco, will benefit from the delivery of 94,339 banana suckers that will be planted and used as temporary shade for cocoa and coffee crops.

The National Commission for Development and Life without Drugs explained, in an announcement made yesterday, that they expected the San Jorge Supte area to be producing more than 180 hectares of bananas in the short term, i.e. the next nine months. The initiative is expected to directly benefit producers, as it would supply them with food and an extra source of income.

The Commission added that, per hectare, each participating family would receive about 625 suckers of various banana varieties, which would be chosen according to their adaptability to the area in which they will be grown.

The vegetative material to be delivered has technical features to prevent possible diseases during its development and final production in the field.
