COVIL - Fruit Logistica Hall 4.2 - Stand D-10

Italy: We are looking for new partners abroad

"2013 was the 15th anniversary of Consorzio Vivaisti Lucani-COVIL. A good result, I would say, especially considering the problems faced in Southern Italy," says Vito Vitelli, General Manager of COVIL.

"The new products introduced last year were Rojo Brillante persimmons as well as Wonderful and Mollar pomegranates."

"Rojo Brillante" fruits, from Spain.

"Wonderful" pomegranates, from California.

"We have strongly promoted citrus fruits like hybrid tangerines, oranges, clementines, early (October-November) and late (February-March) lemons, as well as early peaches and nectarines (May-June), "Rojo Brillante" persimmons and pomegranates."

"Sagittaria" fruit. A peach variety of Italian origin obtained by Oreste Insero. It is patented and multiplied by CO.VI.L thanks to a licence by the CRA.

Vito points out that what they managed to achieve last year were the results of a path started in 1998, when the Consortium was established.
When the ten year anniversary was celebrated in 2009, the bases of the guidelines for the following five years were established.

"Big Red" fruits. Patented variety cultivated by CO.VI.L. thanks to a licence by Escande.

The Consortium worked a lot to acquire multiplication rights of many varieties of stonefruit, citrus fruit, persimmons and pomegranates as well as new, much more tolerant rootstocks.

"Mandalate" fruits. Hybrid triploid tangerine. Patented and multiplied thanks to a CRA-ACM licence.

All of this was combined with the introduction of micrografts, new protected environment production techniques, inert and sterile substrata, and the application of certification processes based on the cultivation with parent plants in a protected environment.

ROOTPAC plants in a protected environment ready for grafting. The brand new Spanish rootstock (Agromillora Iberica s.l.) is suitable for peach, apricot, almond and cherry trees.

Producing certified plants is the main objective of nursery gardeners, however competition is strong, so "we need to make supplies more complete in order not to rely only on lower prices, which in the long run could affect the safety of fruit."

This is precisely why technical assistance is essential. "Growers must not be left alone in managing the orchard. COLIV's technical staff is available to teach producers everything there is to know as regards soil, foliage and nutrition management and post-harvesting."

CO.VI.L. promotes study days to teach producers everything they need to know concerning soil, foliage, nutrition and post-harvesting management.

"Thanks to CO.VI.L's campaign many producers have grown and have optimised their productive process."

"We will take part to Fruit Logistica like we do every year to establish new working relations with companies located in Spain, France and Maghreb."

COVIL will share a collective stand (Hall 4.2 / Stand D-10) with Asso Fruit Italia PO, Agricola Felice, Ancona PO, Distretto del Metapontino and the Matera Chamber of Commerce.

Vito Vitelli and Lucio Iocoli, General Manager and Chairman of the Consortium respectively, will represent the consortium.
