Italy: hazelnuts and mushrooms prices are skyrocketing

The current season for Italian hazelnuts and mushrooms is facing soaring prices due to a strong production decrease of about -50%. Climatic conditions are the main causes for this shortage.

Hazelnut production has suffered too many rains during the spring period, followed by drought during the summer. Moreover, the Mediterranean fruit fly has spread after the use of some chemicals has been banned. Prices for Italian hazelnuts are running at a level price of 3,40 - 3,60 euro/kg, with top prices of 4,00 euro/kg as well. Some sellers in the southern areas of Italy are cheating, selling as original Italian products some foreign arrivals from Bulgaria, Hungary, Turkey and California.

Mushrooms' production has been reduced by unfavourable weather conditions as well. Italian mushrooms' turnover is about 600 mln euro annually. This year however, concurrence from other countries such as East-European countries or North Africa will be stronger, due to the high prices of the Italian product (3 -4 euro/kg).
