Eryvan Pires, Fruitmarket:

"November & December very difficult for mango market"

"November and December was a difficult time for the mango market," explained Eryvan Pires from Fruit Market. "It was a tricky situation as Brazil's harvest was later than usual, and delivery was then delayed by two to three weeks. The reason for this was severe drought and warmth during the flowering period so when they were ready too many were shipped over at once, then Peru's harvest arrived on the market much earlier than usual. There was just too much volume for an unbending market and oversupply so it couldn't have gone any worse. This summed up the situation for us at the end of the year."

"In November 2012 the season was excellent and this lasted until December 15 when too much fruit arrived and the market began to collapse. January 2013 was also a difficult month with the remnants from Brazil and the start of the Peruvian season, but Peru did supply less."

"At the moment it is time to clear out the supply and start again. The Peruvian season is now running on and Brazil is as good as over." According to Eryvan more volume was shipped over than the previous year. "The numbers are in line with historical volumes. Week 4 is normally the peak of the Peruvian mango season so I do not expect prices to go up in these first months. On the other side I think retailers could do more to promote the mango so that consumers can learn more about the possibilities of this tasty fruit and purchase more. We have put a difficult season behind us so hopefully it will get better."
