U.S. supermarkets raise the price of Mexican vegetables by 300%

The prices of vegetables from Sinaloa in U.S. supermarkets have increased by up to 300 percent, widening the difference between what the producers are paid and what the consumers are charged. According to Roberto Compean Osuna, VP of the Tomato Product System in Sinaloa, they are becoming monopolies that are increasing their utilities each day and using technology to encourage and discourage consumption, which is why they make a killing in winter.

"There are products that are 300 percent more expensive, that is three or four times the price paid to the producer, the differential is exaggerated," he said.

He said that, for the moment, they have no problem with the checkpoints implemented by the Guadalupe Reyes operation or with the blockages in VĂcam, Sonora. He stated that despite the big flow of truckloads of vegetables, mobility was normal and there weren't many traffic jams. However, he said, authorities must continue efforts to resolve the road problems as the peak production of vegetables will be in late January or early February and there will be more trucks transiting the federal roads.
