Spain: Tarragona to produce more than 70 million sweet onions

Tarragona will produce 70 million calçots (sweet onions) this season, and 10 to 12 million of them will be certified by the Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) Calçot de Valls, according to the Valls Chamber of Commerce.

The PGI Calçot de Valls brings together around 50 sweet onion producers from the regions of Alt Camp, Baix Camp, Tarragonès and Baix Penedès.

Some restaurants in the area have already included the first calçots in their menus, although the official season will not begin until 26 January, with a great party, and will finish in April.

The Chamber has predicted a very positive campaign in terms of quantity, quality and sanitary conditions, and also announced the discovery of two new varieties after seven years of research, which will make it possible to double the production.

From 10 kilos of seeds, it will be possible to grow 2.5 million onions, which will in turn result in 15 million calçots.
