Positive end to Aussie citrus season

The Australian citrus season is drawing to a close and for growers in Queensland it has turned out a lot more positive than they could have imagined back in January.

At the beginning of the year the area was hit by floods which put many 1,000’s of trees underwater. "The season didn't start well, the trees were under water for around 12 hours before the water dispersed. We were lucky that the majority of our flooded trees came good and only 10% were lost," explains Chris Devenny from Favco.

The season progressed very positively for Favco with a strong domestic market and growing exports to Asia. "The New Zealand and domestic markets are very important to us and we are increasing exports to Asia. We are seeing a decline in exports to the US which is due to the quality of South American citrus getting better, they can also supply it cheaper than us."

Favco are now exporting as much as 60% of some varieties to China, a market which continues to grow. "With the decline in the US exports Australian growers have had to look closer to home for new markets. China, Japan, Hong Kong, the Middle East and Indonesia are just some of the places we ship to."

Favco still have a selection of citrus available including Honey Murcott and Afourer manderins, Late Lane Navels and Valencias, lemons, Limes and red grapefruit.
