"Jan Timmermans: "I expect prices are rock bottom now"

Price pressure on Conference pears, especially the smaller sizes

The Conference pearharvest has been higher than originally expected and that has created pricepressure especially for the smaller sizes. At the auction in Belgiumtoday, the price per kilo was around 60-75 cents for the large size, 30-50cents for middle sized, and around 25 cents for the small sizes.

"Large sizesare more stable in price than small sizes," notes Jan Timmermans, topfruit exporter from Veen. "Virtually all destinations are a market forConference pears. Russia also imports them, but there is a lot on offer. I thinkthat we have now hit the bottom with the price. I don't expect the price to fallany further, and that it will, in time, improve."
